Anila Rubiku:

Anila Rubiku (b.1970, Albania) lives and works between Toronto, Milan and Tirana. Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Tirana (1995) and the Academy of Brera, Milan, Italy (2000).  Rubiku's work is intimately connected to social and political issues. Her works are poetic and practical exposures of the human social psychological condition wrapped up in a magical sense of humor and full of irony. She has tackled such topics as the corrupt and subsequent desecration of the built and natural environment (Kiev Biennale, 2012); on being an immigrant (Venice Biennale 2011); dictators and their malign egos (Tel Aviv Museum 2014); the "meaning" of a home (Hammer Museum residency, LA, 2013), the future of Cities and Democracy (Venice Architectural Biennale, 2008); and Albania, women, justice and the law ( 5th Thessaloniki Biennale, 2015).  The Foreign Policy Magazine and the State Department of the USA awarded her as one of the top Global Thinkers of 2014 (Washington DC) and she was nominated by the Human Rights Foundation in May 2014.  Select residencies include Creative Fusion International Artist in Residence Program, The Cleveland Foundation (2016); TICA Art LAB, Tirana, Albania (2013), Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, USA (2013), Krems, Austria (2011) and Residence International Aux Recollets, Paris, France (2010).  Select solo exhibitions include Fearful Intentions, Josza Gallery, Brussels (2014); About translation, Galerie IG Bildende Kunst, Vienna (2011); and Laws, Lies, Traditions & Convictions, Josza Gallery, Brussels (2010).  Select group exhibitions include Under Erasure, Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Tel Aviv (2014);Histoires de je (part 1), Gallery Dix9.
