Michelle Stuart (b. Los Angeles, USA) is internationally known for a rich and diverse body of work engendered by her lifelong interest in the natural world and the cosmos. Since the 1960s she has pioneered the use of non-traditional materials in producing and exhibiting monumentally scaled works on paper, site-specific earth art, multimedia installations, paintings, sculpture, and photographic works. Stuart has exhibited widely in Europe, Asia, and the United States, and major examples of her work can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, the National Gallery of Australia, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among many others. Stuart has recently (2013-14) been the subject of a solo exhibition, Drawn from Nature, which traveled from Djanogly Art Gallery at the University of Nottingham, UK to the Parrish Art Museum and Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Additionally, Stuart has participated in recent group shows, New Jersey as Non-Site, at Princeton University Art Museum, and Beyond Earth Art, at Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University and Landmarks at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City. Stuart has received five National Endowment for the Arts Awards and a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship Grant. Her work has been featured in two sections of Documenta in Kassel Germany.
