John Strutton (b.1966, Bedfordshire, UK) is a London based artist. He holds a MA in Fine Art (Painting) from Royal College of Art, London (1996-1998). Since 1999 Strutton’s practice has taken the form of drawing, installation, video/animation and performance. Over the past five years Strutton has been working on a growing archive of short video works, which are exhibited as a form of playlist in chapters, along side graphic works and objects. Each short film is a response to an often, singular anecdote, situation, image or overheard phone conversation expanded through a process of mobile phone footage, collage and low-fi animation.
In 1999 he formed the The Band of Nod which performed and exhibited at Camden Arts Centre, Reading Festival, Tate Britain and The Whitechapel Gallery as well as other venues in Finland, Spain and Switzerland. From 2003 till 2008 he ran and directed, with the artist Alan Miller, the project space “39” in London and is currently senior tutor in Painting at the Royal College of Art. Recent solo exhibitions include Grease Madonna (2014) and Opus Dopus (2012) at Domobaal, London and Donderslag at Volta NY, New York (2009). Recent group exhibitions include The Right Hand Gives, The Left Hand Takes Away, Extrapool, Nijmegen, Netherlands (2013), MK Calling, MK Gallery, Milton Keynes (2013) and Parkhaus, Kunsthalle Dusseldorf, Germany (2008). He has worked for the past 5 years with Domobaal gallery in London.
