Born 1949 Lisbon, João Penalva lives and works in London. Graduated from BA Fine Art (1979), and MA Fine Art (1981), Chelsea School of Art, London.
Selected solo exhibitions include Mudam, Musée d'Art Moderne, Luxembourg (2019); Lundskonsthall, Lund (2010); Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2006); Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto (2005); Ludwig Museum, Budapest, (2005); The Power Plant, Toronto (2003); Pavilion of Portugal, XLIX Biennale di Venezia, Venice (2001); and Camden Arts Centre, London (2000). Selected group exhibitions include Move: Choreographing You, Hayward Gallery, London (2010); Process - Landscape, KIASMA, Helsinki (2003); Biennale of Sydney (2002); Berlin Biennale 2 (2001); and XXIII Bienal Internacional de São Paulo (1996).
Penalva was awarded the DAAD Residency, Berlin (2003).
