Phillip Lai (b. 1969, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) lives and works in London. He studied at Middlesex Polytechnic, London and Chelsea College of Art & Design. Since 2006, he has been a lecturer on the BA Fine Arts course at Goldsmiths. Lai is known for a diverse practice often emphasising spatial experience, situation and encounter as materials. His work brings about a sense of itinerancy and estrangement in its particular use of familiar objects, arranged incongruously, altered or reproduced, pushing them to the point of abstraction. Selected solo exhibitions include: Besides, Camden Arts Center, London (2014); Galleria Franco Noero, Turin (2012); Stuart Shave/Modern Art, London (2012); Stuart Shave/Modern Art, London (2009); and Introduction and Jargon,Transmission Gallery, Glasgow (2009). Selected group exhibitions include: Interior, Stuart Shave/Modern Art, London (2014); Somewhat Abstract, Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham (2014); London Twelve, City Gallery Prague, Prague, Czech Republic (2012); No Soul For Sale: A Festival of Independents (Mousse contribution, curated by Jonathan Griffin), Tate Modern, Turbine Hall, London (2010); and Drawing Biennial 2009, Drawing Room, London (2009).
