Peter Matthews (b.1978, UK) lives in Leicestershire, UK. Studied his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Fine Art at the Nottingham Trent University. He has been working in and with the ocean since 2007. Drawing in the ocean is a practice that has taken the artist to remote places around the world from the Atlantic coast in Cornwall to the Pacific Ocean off Hawaii. In his practice working with the landscape in a very direct way, Matthews seeks to work with and reveal, explore and experience the sublime and the spiritual, the metaphysical and the transcendental, contemporary human relationships of being alone in nature and reconnecting with the world. Matthews’ work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions relating to themes such as time and place, space and body, performance and nature, the mysterious and the poetic. Select solo exhibitions include Artissima Fair, Italy (2016); In Search of the Sublime, Beers, London (2016); Sea Marks, Mendes Wood DM, Sao Paulo (2011) and Continuum, James Cohan Gallery, New York (2011). Select group exhibitions include Sea Marks, The Drawing Center, New York (2010); The Experience of Time Through Contemporary Art, North Carolina Museum of Contemporary Art (2013); Sea Journeys, Künstlerhaus Dortmund (2013); and Nature: Here and Now, The Wirksworth Festival (2016).
