Josh Tonsfeldt (b.1979, Missouri, USA) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He received his MFA from Columbia University, New York, and his undergraduate degree from Purchase College, Purchase, NY. John Tonsfeldt's work is culled from experimental residue more than formal studio practice. Reconfiguring moments and places from his day-to-day experience, his intuitive approach, manipulation of materials, and subject matter are deliberately de-centered and resonant. Images printed on the reverse of photo paper, framed by reconstituted CHEP pallets and delicate cast forms, degrade the imprint of memory to near abstraction. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Rowhouse Project, Baltimore (2014); Simon Preston, New York (2013 and 2011), Galerie VidalCuglietta, Brussels (2013); and Franco Soffiantino Gallery, Torino, Italy (2010). In addition, his work has recently been included in the group exhibitions Mississippi, GaMec, Bergamo, Italy (2014); Out of Memory, Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York (2013); New York: Directions, Points of Interest, Massimo De Carlo, Italy (2012); and Looking Back: The Fifth White Columns Annual - Selected by Bob Nickas, Sculpture Center's In Practice series (2010).
